Fellowships

Literary Arts Fellowships

Recipients of the Borchard Center on Literary Arts Fellowships may be at any stage of their career. Although exceptions may be made, recipients should be citizens or residents of the United States, Mexico, or Canada. Emphasis is placed on writers, but literary translators, scholars, and educators may also qualify. The $10,000 fellowships are meant to underwrite the costs of a recipient’s travel, food, and lodging at the Retreat and Encuentro held annually in Oaxaca, Oaxaca, Mexico as well as to offset lost income during their time away from home. Fellows are expected to remain inOaxaca for the entirety of the Retreat and Encuentro. Fellowship recipients are automatically eligible for three years of funding.

There is no application for this award. It is by invitation only. Potential candidates are selected from the public by the Nominating Committee, which submits candidates and potential alternates to the Foundation Board of Directors for final approval.

Senior Literary Fellowships

In the interest of fostering an ongoing community of literary artists, once fellowship recipients have received three years of funding, they immediately become eligible for a Senior Literary Fellowships, which are meant to offset the cost of travel and lodging to the Retreat and Encuentro but not cover other expenses. While eligibility is guaranteed to former Fellowship recipients, actual awards depend upon available resources, with preference going to Fellowships.
